That means we receive federal funds to
help increase student achievement. This money helps provide additional teachers, support
our free summer journalism camp, buy curriculum materials
and technology for our classrooms as well as books and supplies
for students, and fund parent workshops. Click here for more information on Title I.
We are seeking parent input on our Title I compact for the 2012-2013 school year. The compact can be found here.

Melrose Elementary is a journalism magnet school
in St. Petersburg, Florida. It is the only elementary school in Pinellas County to have netbooks for each student to use. At Melrose, students receive hands-on,
real-world experience for writing, speaking,
photography and videography.

Students with digital cameras in hand
document the action at Melrose. Students
with notebooks scour
the school for news -- taking notes, doing interviews and
writing stories on laptop computers. They hold
press conferences
with the mayor at City Hall and do phone interviews with School
Board members. Journeys in Journalism is a full-school magnet program, that
gives every student a hands-on, real-world experience.
The mission of Melrose Elementary is to increase achievement to 100% student success and lifelong learners by providing a safe, positive and challenging environment in order to develop responsible citizen and creative, curious lifelong learners.
Melrose Elementary Vision Statement
The vision of Melrose Elementary, its staff and and administrators is to unite with parents and community to ensure success for all students.
Melrose Elementary Guiding Principles

Pathways to Success
In the 2010-2011 school year, the State Department of Education adopted new standards for our curriculum areas. Because the standards changed, the end of the year testing changed as well and FCAT is now referred to as FCAT 2.0. As you might think, requirements for graduation were impacted by this change. It is never too early to begin thinking about what will be asked of your child in order to graduate! If you would like to preview the details of this information, click here. The brochure is also available on our district website using www.pcsb.org under the Parents and Students tab and following the drop down menu to locate the Parent’s Bulletin Board postings. It is full of interesting information!
All Melrose students
get netbooks to use
The arrival of netbooks makes Melrose Elementary the first elementary school in Pinellas to give each student the use of a classroom laptop in the one-on-one computer program.
Classroom Kindles are here!
Melrose just received 22 more Kindles, a classroom set purchased by the Library Media Services department. These ereaders will be used to support independent reading, as well as classroom literature circles.
The Melrose Reading Leadership Team has ordered nearly $1400 in Kindle book codes. Once they arrive, the books will be ordered electronically and registered on the Kindles. Popular series include:
Dan Gutman's "My Weird School"
Barbara Parks' "Junie B. Jones"
Mary Pope Osborne's "Magic Tree House"
David Adler's "Cam Jansen"
Megan McDonald's "Judy Moody"
Rick Riordan's "Percy Jackson"
Also included with the ebook purchase was a $500 voucher to purchase apps from the itunes store for our iPad lab.
Melrose students are reading more than ever before, and in many nontraditional ways. It's all good, and the "out of the book" ways are good preparation for the workforce of the future that they will encounter after they leave Pinellas County Schools.
The next time you are on campus, stop in the media center and ask for Mrs. Albietz or Mr. Williams. We'll gladly show you the iPad lab and the Kindle set so you can see the options available to your students.
