Melrose is a
Title I school

That means we receive federal funds to help increase student achievement. This money helps provide additional teachers, support our free summer journalism camp, buy curriculum materials and technology for our classrooms as well as books and supplies for students, and fund parent workshops. Writing

Melrose Elementary is a journalism magnet school
in St. Petersburg, Florida. It is the only elementary school in Pinellas County to have netbooks for each student to use. At Melrose, students receive hands-on, real-world experience for writing, speaking, photography and videography.

LeDrake

Students with digital cameras in hand document the action at Melrose. Students
with notebooks scour the school for news -- taking notes, doing interviews and writing stories on laptop computers. They hold
press conferences with the mayor at City Hall and do phone interviews with School Board members. Journeys in Journalism is a full-school magnet program, that gives every student a hands-on, real-world experience.

to Journeys in Journalism.

After School Care and
School Readiness
Scholarships Available

Children from low to moderate-income working families or with other identified risk factors, may receive scholarships to attend an early education or after school program. Eligibility is determined by the parents' income and must not exceed 150% of the federal poverty level. Children ages birth to 12 years are eligible for scholarship. Exceptions may be made for older children with special needs. Participants in this program receive a developmentally appropriate curriculum, character education and vision, hearing and developmental screening. Additionally, this program allows parents to focus on professional and educational goals and begin to break the poverty cycle.

If you or your child meets criteria, you may be eligible for child care services at reduced or no cost, offered by Florida's Office of Early Learning.

After school care is provided locally by the Royal Theater on 22nd Street, and a bus comes to Melrose to pick up the students. For more information, contact Kayren Lovett, Club Director, at 327-6556.

District Launches New Online Educational Resource

The district is making available for students, parents and teachers a new education resource that provides more than 1,200 activities students can do in the classroom or at home. Teaching & Learning Services and Technology Information Systems have teamed up with InSync Education, a Maryland-based education technology company founded in 2007, to provide this opportunity and are encouraging families to try it out during the holidays and to continue using it after students return to school in January. The site, accessible via a link on the homepage of the district’s website and here, provides numerous resources including homework help, focused assistance in specific subject areas such as math, social studies, science, language arts and college and career readiness, as well as FCAT preparation. All activities are presented in English and Spanish. Available online 24 hours a day, InSync can be accessed from any computer or mobile device.

To view the materials, click on the InSync logo on the homepage of the PCS website or go to www.insyncedu.com/insync. Enter PCSB as the code, select “Start,” and create a username, password and profile.

Our Parental Involvement Plan can be found here.

Pathways to Success

In the 2010-2011 school year, the State Department of Education adopted new standards for our curriculum areas.  Because the standards changed, the end of the year testing changed as well and FCAT is now referred to as FCAT 2.0.  As you might think, requirements for graduation were impacted by this change.  It is never too early to begin thinking about what will be asked of your child in order to graduate!  The brochure is available on our district website using www.pcsb.org under the Parents and Students tab and following the drop down menu to locate the Parent’s Bulletin Board postings.  It is full of interesting information!

Parent Portal

So much of what we do in terms of registration is done on line these days, and you need your parent portal login information to do it. Did you know your child's grade cards and current class status is also available, and you can check their progress daily?

Go to http://portal.pcsb.org and login using your p.XXXX login. If you need help remembering it, contact Jodi Rivera or Hattie Barton in the front office.

Back to School
Care Fair

It's never too early to plan for success! Plan to attend the Back to School Care Fair at Enoch Davis Rec Center on August 3. See a flyer here for details

Common Core

By now you have heard about Common Core, the new standards that are taking effect next school year. For further information, go to

http://pta.org/parents/content.cfm?ItemNumber=2910

to see a description of what your child will be learning, arranged by grade level.
